Travel vicariously via vino through the top Italian summer destination this summer with our series called Destination Italy. Starting with Sicily, we have collected some of the top wines from the island. From the luxurious seaside town of Taormina, made famous in White Lotus, to the elegant and historic Trapani, Sicily is an island of wonders. Wonderful food, wonderful people and of course wonderful wines!
Sicily has an incredible variety of both native grapes - the most in Italy! - and international varieties and diverse climates and soil types. Mt. Etna is Europe's most active volcano, spewing ash and smoke and adding vital nutrients to the soil. Vittoria is home to the island's only DOCG wine, Cerasuolo di Vittoria, a blend of the crowd-favorite, rich and ripe Nero d’Avola with the bright, cherry-fruited Frappato grape. Marsala wines are for more than just cooking, these excellent fortified wines are a rival to Port or Madeira. The Aeolian islands produce crisp, salty whites, perfect for grilled fish. In short, there is a never-ending wealth of wine exploration possible on the magical island of Sicily!
