Tasting Notes: From the Island of Lipari emerge the Castellaro Nero Ossidiana, a unique red wine made from the local Corinto Nero grapes. Notes of cherry and spices that blend with the intriguing salty side of Corinto Nero for an enveloping olfactory complexity. The medium frame has a freshness that could only come from an island breeze, marking this red as a good wine for both rich seafood and braised meat dishes.
Estate History: Lipari is a land full of contradictions. It is the largest, most populous, and the most developed of the Aeolian islands. However, beneath its bustling surface lies ancient archaeological sites and a millennia of geological history. Tenuta di Castellaro live out this past-future tug of war. Their ambitious winery runs on what they call “bioenergy,” making use of the island’s ample wind and sunlight. Their cellars model an ancient Norman church, featuring vaulted ceilings and dug-out pillars, whose edges have been left rugged, unsanded, to show off how centuries of volcanic eruptions have impacted Lipari’s soil.
