Tasting Notes: The 2019 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is celebrated for its elegance, precision, and depth, offering complex aromas of forest floor, dog rose, camphor, and dark spice. On the palate, vibrant red cherry, star anise, orange zest, and crushed mint flavors are framed by firm, refined tannins and bright acidity, culminating in a very long, mineral-driven finish. This youthfully austere wine has both muscle and supple roundness, promising excellent aging potential for at least a decade or more.

Estate History: The Roagna family's winemaking history stretches back to the late 1800s in the Barbaresco commune of Piedmont. Vincenzo Roagna started the estate, which was passed down through generations to Giovanni, then Alfredo, and is now run by the fifth generation, Luca Roagna. The family acquired their first vineyard, Montefico, in 1929 and eventually fulfilled a long-held dream of owning a Barolo cru with the purchase of the Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto in 1989. They are known for their traditional, classic winemaking style, which includes using indigenous yeasts, long submerged-cap macerations (often 60-90 days), and extended aging in neutral oak casks to create deep, structured, and age-worthy wines that express the unique complexity of their single vineyards.
