Tasting Notes: The 2019 Roagna Barolo Pira is a powerful yet elegant expression of Nebbiolo that demands patience. The wine presents a complex bouquet of wild strawberry, red cherry, blood orange, and dried roses, layered with intriguing notes of white pepper, mint, anise, and iron-rich earth. On the palate, it is full-bodied with a beautiful mineral core, showing exceptional depth and luminosity. Firm, polished tannins and vibrant acidity frame the core of red fruit and savory herbs, leading to a long, chiseled finish that promises decades of evolution in the cellar.
Estate History: The Roagna family has deep roots in Piedmont, with the winery's history tracing back to Vincenzo and Rosa Roagna in the late 1800s in the Barbaresco region. The estate has been passed down through five generations, with the current proprietor, Luca Roagna, managing the vineyards and winemaking since 2001. A significant milestone occurred in 1989 when the family acquired the prestigious, solely-owned (monopole) Pira vineyard in the Barolo commune of Castiglione Falletto. The Roagnas are known for their staunchly traditional, natural winemaking principles, employing no herbicides or pesticides, utilizing mass selection to preserve genetic diversity, and practicing extended maceration and long aging in large neutral oak casks to produce age-worthy wines that are a pure expression of their unique terroir.
