This ancient grape variety owes its origins to the Greeks, who imported the "vitis Apicia" variety into the Campania region and it seems that the first vines were planted in the locality of Lapio. The name Apicia derives from the typical scent and sweetness of the fruit that attracts bees to the vineyards, it was subsequently changed to Apinia then Afiana to arrive later at the definitive Fiano. The spread of Fiano not only in Irpinia, but in several other areas of southern Italy, has been documented since the thirteenth century, with the Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, in whose royal registers the purchase order of three ‘sa lme’ (equivalent 78 liters) of Fiano destined for his Apulian court. Charles II of Anjou himself sent about 16,000 vines from Cava dei Tirrenia to his royal estate in Manfredonia. Tradition has it that the Benedictine fathers of the Sanctuary of Montevergine, who planted vines, were able to cultivate the vine (together with Aglianico and Greco) from the barbarian hordes after the fall of the Roman Empire. There still today, a small patch of land facing southwest is dedicated to Fiano. Coming to more recent history, the Fiano has emerged since the first edition of the Ampelographic Bulletin in 1875 when production reached over one million hectoliters, so important as to encourage the construction of the first local railway, not surprisingly called the "railway of wine''.
