Tasting Notes: The Proprietà Sperino Lessona is an exercise in Nebbiolo elegance, delivering a complex and inviting aromatic profile where crushed red berries, wild rose, and violet petals interweave with sophisticated notes of mint, white truffle, and a distinctive iron-rich minerality. The palate is defined by its vibrant freshness and linear structure, showcasing refined, dusty tannins that provide excellent grip and balance without harshness. The wine is medium-bodied yet persistent, culminating in a long, savory finish that leaves an impression of pure, high-toned red fruit and stony earth.
Estate History: The Sperino estate represents a vital piece of the Alto Piemonte's winemaking heritage, a tradition masterfully revived by the vision of Paolo De Marchi of Chianti Classico fame, and his son Luca. The project, initiated in the late 1990s, involved the meticulous restoration of historic vineyards and cellars within the esteemed Lessona DOC, an area largely forgotten after the mid-20th century. By focusing purely on Nebbiolo (Spanna) grown in unique, acidic marine sands, the De Marchis successfully re-established a benchmark for the region, proving that Lessona can produce wines of profound depth, minerality, and incredible age-worthiness, distinct from the more famous expressions of Barolo and Barbaresco.
