Tasting Notes: De Bartoli makes only one red wine. Initially, Marco made it from Merlot and Cabernet, commonly planted international varieties which swept Sicily in the 1980's; his doctor recommended he drink red for his health et voilà. But in keeping with his and the family's commitment to all things native and local, De Bartoli dumped the Bordeaux reds in favor of an under-utilized, little-known black variety called Pignatello (also locally known as Perricone); its name evolved from the word pignatte, a typical clay cooking pot made from the local red-earth pignatiddare. Floral and bright, with red fruits are the core of the flavor profile, the tannins are softened by aging for 1 year in 10 hectoliter French oak foudres.

Estate History: Marco de Bartoli, after a career as a race car driver, decided to reconstruct his family’s old cellar on his mother’s farm in Samperi, Sicily. The goal was to reinvigorate Marsala wine, which had fallen from the elegant, sipping wine that was an equal to fine sherry in the 1900’s, to a cooking wine. He was able to source old solera barrels of the traditional Grillo wine used to make both a ‘Vecchio Samperi’ or unfortified Marsala and a ‘Superiore’ line that was fortified with ‘mistella’ sweet must and eau de vie. These two Marsala speak to the past and the future of Marsala. Marco has since expanded into producing Passito wines on the Island of Panteller
