Tasting Notes: The Marco De Bartoli Marsala Superiore Riserva was conceived and produced to respect its “natural” tradition: it is fortified with a “mistella” produced from fresh grape must and fruit brandy obtained from the same grapes of the base wine. This pleasant semi-dry Marsala Superiore goes brilliantly at the end of the meal with cookies. It is also great with blue cheeses
Estate History: Marco de Bartoli, after a career as a race car driver, decided to reconstruct his family’s old cellar on his mother’s farm in Samperi, Sicily. The goal was to reinvigorate Marsala wine, which had fallen from the elegant, sipping wine that was an equal to fine sherry in the 1900’s, to a cooking wine. He was able to source old solera barrels of the traditional Grillo wine used to make both a ‘Vecchio Samperi’ or unfortified Marsala and a ‘Superiore’ line that was fortified with ‘mistella’ sweet must and eau de vie. These two Marsala speak to the past and the future of Marsala. Marco has since expanded into producing Passito wines on the Island of Pantelleria and dry red and white wines, all organic and using indigenous yeasts and with little to no additives or chemicals in the vineyards.
