Tasting Notes: Baronj is a historic Pachino cru noted for the whiteness of its soils, due to the composition being rich in limestone. The 40 year-old Nero d'Avola vines grow there at an altitude of 50 meters. The chalky soils add a distinct mineral edge to this robust red, adding balance and making it a true crowd pleaser.
Estate History: Chiaramonte Gulfi was established in the 1970s by Raffaele Catania; his son Vito took over the running of the estate in 1995, but today it is run by his sons Matteo and Raffaele. Gulfi is located in the southeast tip of Sicily, in the province of Ragusa, with a goal to elevate Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s workhorse red grape. Vito and his sons focus on four ‘grand cru’ sites near Pachino in the Eloro DOC. These organic vineyards, all located in the Val di Noto, have unique soils and exposures that showcase different expressions of Nero d’Avola.
