Tasting Notes: A collboration between two friends, grapes are harvested from a very small 90-year-old vineyard in the Gran Sasso National Park on sandy and stony soils. Aged in both steel tanks and tonneaux, Sotto il Ceraso is a mountain Cerasuolo. It expresses a wild juicy cherry fruit, but shows exceptional finesse and a savory glimmer.
Estate History: Over the last twelve years, Luca-Paolo Virgilio has steadily built a farm in Pietranico to explore the meaning of nature in the wild Abruzzese zone of Italy, where the mountains and sea seem almost to collide. Over 22 windswept hectares, dominated by forests, Luca-Paolo farms just a mere 4.5 hectares of vines, alongside olive trees, grains, and beehives.
Here, at 400 meters of elevation, stone crushing vats--le vasche--of centuries-old-age characterize the agricultural landscape; this is an area almost prehistorically known for wine growing. Trebbiano and Montepulciano are planted with vine material from their friends at Emidio Pepe. These grapes, in this land, are endowed with a mineral expression and evocative intensity that feels clearly mountainous yet so different from alpine wines further north. Just a few thousand bottles made each year, these are pure, savory wines from Abruzzo--clean, but intensely proud of their place and personality.
