Tasting Notes: This rich, full-bodied red wine, crafted in the traditional appassimento method, is concentrated with intense aromas and flavors of dark cherries, blackberries, and a hint of sour cherry, characteristic of the Valpantena valley. Nuances of spice, mineral, and a subtle herbaceousness evolve over a silky texture, supported by fine, supple tannins and a well-balanced acidity that leads to a persistent finish. The wine offers an approachable yet powerful profile, with notes of vanilla, tobacco, and licorice adding complexity as a result of its aging process.
Estate History: Founded in 1857 by brothers Giovan Battista and Gaetano Bertani in the Valpantena region north of Verona, the winery has a long and storied history of innovation and excellence. Gaetano, who studied modern viticulture techniques in France under Dr. Jules Guyot, brought pioneering methods back to Italy, including the introduction of a dry, French-inspired red wine style known as Secco-Bertani, and was one of the first to bottle his own wines rather than selling them in bulk. The estate is particularly renowned as a pioneer of modern Amarone production, having conducted the purposeful experiment in its cellars that transformed sweet Recioto into the dry, opulent Amarone wine we know today, with its first vintage dating back to 1958. Bertani's significant impact on Veneto winemaking has made "Bertani" and "Amarone" nearly synonymous, and the winery even holds a royal warrant.
