Tasting Notes: The Valfaccenda Roero Bianco is a white wine made from Arneis grapes grown on the steep, sandy hills of the Roero. Ageing on the lees adds texture and a beautiful golden color while also giving this crisp white some depth and charge. Over-ripe apple, honeydew melon, sage, and a hint of salinity on the palate mark this as a one-of-a-kind expression of this fantastic variety.
Vinified by Carolina Roggero and Luca Faccenda in Canale, in the Roero, just across the Tanaro river from Barbaresco in Piedmont, it is a pure expression of Roero. The grapes come mainly from two vineyards, Loreto and Mompellini, near Madonna di Loreto. As the different areas of the vineyard have various soil characteristics and exposures, the harvests and the vinifications try to keep in mind the features of every single portion of this plot. After the required aging, the wine is bottled in the waning moon of late spring following the harvest, ready to be sold in autumn.
Estate History: The family estate of Luca Faccenda, then known as Valle Faccenda, can be traced back to 1749. The winery is near the hamlet of Madonna di Loreto in the Roero section of Piedmont, an area known for the white grape Arneis and for crafting supple reds from Nebbiolo. There Luca, an enologist and his partner Carolina, an engineer, started making natural wines on the steep, sandy hills of the Roero in 2010 as Valfaccenda. Both wines offered today are totally unique and yet express completely the soils and area from which they come.
